The
principal building on the property, the Priory of St. Therese, was the
country home of a wealthy financier from New York City. In the 100 years
since it was built, the house has remained a beautiful reminder of a gracious
life style. Those traveling to Mahwah in the first years of the house's
existence found a beautiful Hudson Valley Georgian house perched on a stony
rise in the midst of the Ramapo River Valley.
The
house remains a well preserved reflection of that time. A large, hard wood
floored, chandelier lit foyer is the main entrance off of the central courtyard.
A grand staircase ascends to the second floor. There is comfortable living
room and an intimate beautifully appointed dining room. Fireplaces adorn
three rooms. At the top of the house nestled in the eaves is a quiet reading
room. Most rooms have magnificent views of the Ramapo River Valley which is breathtaking
in every season.
