The
Carmelite Friars who staff the retreat house rely on their rich Carmelite
heritage and spirituality which is rooted in the desert of the Holy Land.
In
their hazardous beginnings on Mount Carmel in the 12th century, the founding
community had to trust in God alone. The first Carmelites were inspired
to live in God's presence and respond in prayer and prophetic ministry
by the Hebrew Scriptures' prophet, Elijah, and by Jesus' mother, Mary of
Nazareth.
Carmel
Retreat's mission statement reflects the spirituality of the Carmelites
who "for 800 years have walked in the |

of Jesus Christ and lived a life of silence and solitude." Carmel
Retreat embodies the spirit of Elijah and Mary and offers an atmosphere
of silence, solitude and hospitality.
Carmelite
spirituality leads one into the silence and solitude of one's soul where
the pilgrim can have an encounter with God. The classic writings of Carmelite
saints serve as guides and instructors for the spiritual journey The team
at Carmel Retreat uses this proven tradition to gently invite others to
reflectively go within, hear God's word and act upon it.
